Throughout the Bible we hear about and witness the power of prayer. Through prayer we connect to God. Through prayer we receive insight about God's desire for our lives. Through prayer we "bear one another's burdens," even as we are given the grace of God to lay those burdens down -- for ourselves and others.

The prayer ministry of Upper Room Ministries® supports people in need of intercessory prayer. Each month, the Living Prayer Center responds to an average of 30,000 prayer requests. It provides a place where anyone at any time can find spiritual support by making a toll-free (United States) telephone call.

Equally important, the Living Prayer Center provides thousands of people the opportunity to serve others through prayer. The Center is a ministry of people linked in intercessory prayer. This network reaches across the United States and beyond. It embodies Upper Room Ministries' commitment to work with congregations and other church-related groups to establish prayer ministries in every community. It confirms the understanding that every congregation is a house of prayer and compassion, open to all and interceding for the world.

The Living Prayer Center is housed in a modest space in Upper Room Ministries' facilities in Nashville, Tennessee, and is supported by four staff people. But the spiritual support and lifeblood of this ministry is the more than 150 volunteers who answer phones in Nashville and more than 2,500 volunteers who participate in 360 Covenant Prayer Groups around the nation. In addition, countless individuals serve each year in 1,200 remote prayer centers where groups staff a prayer line for a specified length of time.

Through this vast network, the Living Prayer Center weaves people together in care and in prayer for the kingdom of God.

Upper Room Ministries is seeking essential financial support to help cover the annual costs necessary to provide intercessory prayer for hundreds of thousands of people in need. We are also seeking funds to expand this ministry with particular emphasis on serving young people and individuals who speak Spanish.

"The connection between caller and volunteer is seemingly a random experience. Yet, many stories come out that defy reason. I think of Muriel, our volunteer who answered the phone to hear a person using broken English ask for someone to pray for her in Mandarin Chinese. Muriel replied, 'I was a missionary for 13 years in China. I will pray for you in your heart language.'"
