An Eagle's Feather
Read Mark 12:41-44
God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.
-2 Corinthians 9:8 (NRSV)
IT is almost midnight. In a few hours I will enter the hospital for major heart surgery, a triple bypass. This evening I had supper with one of my sons and his family. My five-year-old grandson, Ian, presented me with an envelope and his best wishes. Inside the envelope was a single feather.
His mother explained, "Ian has a box in his room; he calls it his treasure chest. He keeps all of his favorite things in it. This is a feather from a bald eagle; it was given to him at a gathering of first-nations people several months ago. It has been his favorite treasure ever since."
Suddenly the feather took on a whole new meaning for me; it was no longer just a pretty and unusual gift. My grandson had given me his most precious possession because he loves me. It reminded me of the poor widow whom Jesus praised for putting all she had into the treasury.
How do we give to God? Do we give to God from our abundance, from what is left over? Or do we freely give our most precious possessions because of our love?

We thank you, God, that you gave the great gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, that through him we might have eternal life. Help us to give the best we have to you and to our neighbors. Amen.

With whom can I share my best gifts today?
