Using Alive Now
Each issue of Alive Now focuses on one theme (named on the front cover of the magazine). The Table of Contents shows the reader how the theme has been divided up into Features, or faith-related sub-themes. We list titles of writings and the names of contributors included in each issue. In addition to the Features, there are several Departments, or recurring components, found in each issue. Some departments are: the Editor's Note, in which the editor introduces the theme and its development and some aspects of its connections to our contemporary lives of faith; Perspectives, in which several quotations open up the range and scope of the thematic treatment; Scripture Readings, which guide the reader to passages in the Hebrew Scriptures and in the New Testament where readers can find guidance and inspiration; Centering, which forms the two pages in the middle of the magazine; Taking It Further, which provides a brief annotation of media resources that also enhance the theme; and The Last Word, which offers a final punch of awareness and insight.
One of the first things readers notice about Alive Now is that it is not a daily devotional guide with a prescribed amount of text to read for each day. Some readers confess that they sit down and read the entire magazine when they first receive it. Others choose to read and ponder only a page or two a day. Alive Now also bursts with color on every page! We carefully select the colors, photographs, and graphics to maximize the reader's encounter with the theme. The provocative juxtaposition of image and word has been a distinguishing characteristic of Alive Now since its inception in 1970.
The text of Alive Now takes many forms. The reader will find brief personal stories, pertinent quotations, poems, songs, prayers, litanies, and more. Many writings will work as discussion starters in small groups that gather to explore the spiritual life in Christ. All writings work for individual meditation. Some pieces work for opening meetings at church. Many readers decide to keep their magazines for future reference when they may encounter a project with the corresponding theme. How ever you choose to use this versatile and relevant magazine, we pray that you find deeper meaning for yourself and others and a closer walk with Christ.
